Non-conventional Energy States - Kerala Kerala to have 2 pvt wind power units Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram June 26 The Kerala Government has issued sanction letters to two private sector companies to set up wind power units in the State. The units will come up at Ramakkalmedu in Idukki district and at Agaly in Palakkad district. The one at Ramakkalmedu, with an installed capacity of 9.7 MW, will be set up by Vestas India, while the other unit at Agaly, with a capacity of 4.8 MW, will be implemented by Suzlon Energy Ltd. The Ramakkalmedu unit will be commissioned by September and the Agaly unit by December this year. These will be the first private sector wind power mills to be established in the State. The land for the installation of the windmills had been bought by the promoters. After handing over the sanction letters to the representatives of the companies here on Tuesday, the Electricity Minister, Mr A.K. Balan, said the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) would purchase power generated by the units at tariffs to be determined by the State Electricity Regulatory Commission. The Minister said that there was potential for generating 200 MW from wind energy at Ramakkalmedu. Almost the same potential had been estimated at Agaly also. Mr Balan said the Government had decided to revive the proposal for exploiting hydro-power potential at 14 locations across the State. The State had signed a memorandum of understanding with a Chinese company in 1998 to set up 18 small hydel projects. Out of these, only four were completed. The remaining 14 projects would be taken up now and negotiations in this regard were held with the company during the Minister's visit to China early this year.
