Strategy Industry & Economy - Rural Development States - Karnataka NGO plans markets for products made by self-help groups Our Bureau
Mangalore June 26 The Mangalore-based Navodaya Gram Vikas Charitable Trust - a non-governmental organisation involved in the formation and implementation of self-help groups (SHGs) in seven districts of the State - is planning to set up markets for products manufactured by its SHGs. Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr M.N. Rajendra Kumar, Managing Trustee, said the trust has set up a market in Bantwal of Dakshina Kannada district. The organic vegetables grown by the SHG members in that area are being marketed in the Bantwal market. With this initiative, the trust wants to provide direct market to the products of SHGs sponsored by it. Based on the feedback there, plans are there to open such markets in every taluk of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. The trust has already conducted three State-level fairs for marketing the products of SHGs, he said. Mr Kumar said the trust has also bagged the award from the Nabard (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) for the implementation of SHGs. The trust is also in talks with LIC for extending micro-insurance scheme to SHG members, he added.
