Relisys Medical mulls contract manufacturing

Invests Rs 30 cr in catheter making facility

Hyderabad, June 27 Relisys Medical Devices, a developer and manufacturer of stents, catheters and medical products, is exploring contract manufacturing in view of interest from international players and potential market.

“In the next six months, we are confident of a tie-up. Discussions with potential partners are in the preliminary stage now,” according to the Chairman, Dr Krishna Reddy.

The Hyderabad-based company has invested Rs 30 crore in what it said was Asia’s first catheter manufacturing facility meeting US Food and Drug Administration norms at Mangalapally village on the outskirts of the city. The President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, is formally inaugurating the facility on June 29.

Talking to newspersons on the eve of the event, Dr Krishna Reddy said the facility is coming up on 7 acres, with a lakh sq.ft of built up area and capacity of two lakh stents, 120,000 diagnostic catheters etc. Funds have been raised from promoters, NRIs and banks.

Key strategy

The key strategy of Relisys Medical Devices, floated in 1998 by a team of professional doctors and management persons, is to develop important medical devices pertaining to heart (stents, catheters etc) and medical disposables at prices 30-50 per cent below competitors, while maintaining high quality, the Chairman said.

The company is also expanding its research and development strengths by creating divisions focused on metallurgy, drug delivery and evaluation. It has technology to develop drug eluting, cobalt chromium, bare and mounted stents, balloon catheters etc.

Relisys has established linkages with international and domestic companies and research institutes to synergise technologies to develop low-cost products.
