Mumbai, June 27 The Italian Port Authority announced the opening of an office in Mumbai on Wednesday. The port with a depth of 32 feet, is situated at the tip of the Adriatic Sea in Central Europe on the East Coast of Italy and is expected to facilitate India’s trade with that part of the world, said Mr Carlo Trevisan, Chief Executive Officer, Nethun.

The port lies along the Mediterranean motorways that link the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean and the Black Sea. “Such an intersection represents an important opportunity that the Port of Venice can exploit,” said Mr Stefano Checchin, representative in India.

Covering an area of 2,045 hectares, the Port of Venice has 30 km of equipped wharves and warehouses, 300 shipping agencies and 150 port operators. It operates from 17 industrial, seven commercial and one passenger terminal.

The port handled a shipping traffic of 310 lakh tonnes last year and a passenger traffic of 15 lakh. The main source of revenue for the port comes from commercial traffic which has a dedicated space of over 230 hectares.

The port authority invested approximately Rs 1,738 crore for the development of the port in the last fiscal 2006-07.
