Lower denomination notes

Mumbai, June 28

The notes of lower denominations of Re 1, Rs 2 and Rs 5 will continue to be a legal tender and will not be withdrawn from circulation. “Though the printing of Re 1, Rs 2 and Rs 5 notes have been discontinued, the notes of these denominations issued earlier will continue to be a legal tender,” said the Reserve Bank of India in a press release. The central bank clarified the doubts being raised among the people regarding the validity or acceptability of these not es and said that people should continue to accept and use the notes in settlement of transactions as has been done in the past. —
