Daily wage workers engaged in a paddy field near Plakkad in Kerala. The rich-poor divide in the rural areas of the State has grown from 1.5 in 1999-2000 to 2.13 in 2004-05. Urban areas had only a marginal rise from 2.3 to 2.43, says a report by the National Sample Survey Organisation ( NSSO) on the monthly per capita consumer expenditure.
