Letters Employability
Your editorial “Not up to the mark” (Business Line, June 29) has drawn attention to the major problem of corporates and other employers not getting required number of employable educated and given fine suggestions for solution. If educational institutions continue to churn out graduates who are not employable, what is the use? They only add to the long list of unemployed. It is necessary that our education system is revamped so that every educated young person is immediately employable. The curricula, teaching methods, exam system and assessments, all require change. Children should get more exposure to practicals, and importance must be given to projects from the school level and the exam and assessments adjusted accordingly. As pointed out in the editorial there needs to be a greater and sustained interaction between industry and educators. A. Jacob Sahayam Thiruvananthapuram Exploiting salt-pans
It is shocking that the Maharashtra Government is drafting a blueprint to exploit the eco-sensitive salt-pan lands for commercial and residential development. Have they forgotten the consequences of July 26, 2005 — the death, and destruction following the incessant rains which all but broke the city’s spine? Do they want the city to drown the next time it pours by eliminating all natural drainage systems, such as wetlands, mangroves and salt-pans that break the force of the high-tides and soak in the excess water? It is hoped the Prime Minister and the Minister for Environment and Forests take note of the proposal and ensure it is scrapped.
