‘Fashion tech a boon for Vizag women’

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam, July 1 Fashion technology and garment-making hold great promise for creating self-employment opportunities for womenfolk in rural India and NGOs and Government departments play a crucial role in imparting training to women and making them employable, according to Mr Iain Coleman, Centre Manager of HSBC’s Visakhapatnam centre.

Mr Coleman was the chief guest at a function organised by the Bhagavatula Charitable Trust (BCT) at Haripuram village in Visakhapatnam district to award certificates to women trainees who had completed a course in fashion technology.

Mr Coleman and Mr Gregory L. Snyder, Deputy Centre Manager, gave away certificates and sewing machines to the trainees.

Mr P. Chalapati Rao, member of the Lok Sabha from Anakapalle, said that Visakhapatnam district would become a textile and readymade garment hub with the setting up of apparel parks at Parawada.

“The apparel park needs as many as 10,000 trained women. The role of the BCT and other NGOs is very vital in training the women,” he added.

Mr B.V Sreenivasa Rao, joint secretary of the BCT, said that the training programme was supported by Toledo, US-based Asha for Education and the Rotary Foundation of Toledo.

The trained girls and women have been given the sewing machines on a loan and they are confident of paying it back.
