Millionaire count

Should we rejoice over the news of India’s millionaire count crossing the one-lakh mark? Millions of people in India, even today, after decades of Five-Year plans, do not have a proper roof over their heads. We proudly declare that our economic growth, at a stupendous nine per cent, is next only to China’s in the world. But what use is that if It has not percolated down to the poor who cannot afford to have even a square meal a day.

It is time the economists analyse the reasons behind the failure of our policies. Are these policies only helping the wealthy add more wealth for themselves? Immediate corrective steps must be taken to bridge the inequality gap between the haves and have-nots.
