Our Bureau Pune, July 2 The first quarter of the current fiscal has been disappointing for Bajaj Auto Ltd’s two-wheelers, as sales dropped 14 per cent year-on-year, and 12 per cent during June alone. Three-wheeler sales during the three-month period remained virtually static. BAL sold 499,777 two-wheelers from April-June 07, against 578,621 units sold in the same period last year. The June sales were 164,758 units against 188,231 in the corresponding month last year. Three-wheeler sales also showed 11 per cent decline in the month, notching sales of 22,866 units against 25,687 units. The figure for the quarter as a whole, however, stood at 1 per cent up at 71,336 against 70,875 units. In a statement, Mr Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director, BAL, said, “First quarter sales have been disappointing; there is increasing evidence of buyers’ diminishing interest in the fundamentally unchanged 100 cc motorcycles currently available, contributing significantly towards the industry-wide slowdown in sales.” Bajaj has successfully completed the pre-production of its all new motorcycle last month and a national launch is scheduled for September. The initial target is 50,000 motorcycles per month to be achieved by January next year.
