‘Paradip port backlog may take 10 days to clear’

Kolkata, July 3

As many as 35 ships are waiting for berths at the Paradip port. “We’ll take at least 10 days or so to clear the backlog,” Mr K. Raghuramaiah, Chairman of the Paradip Port Trust, told Business Line over phone from P aradip.

Factors

Mr Raghuramaiah attributed the present situation to several factors, the most important being the suspension of normal operations for about a week recently — three days from May 28 to 30 and again for three days from June 28 to 30. In May, it was a power failure that crippled normal working of the port while in June it was the cyclonic storm.

“The weather condition having improved, we hope to come back to normal operation soon,” he observed.

At least one berth remained permanently occupied by a vessel caught in a legal dispute, it was pointed out. The output of manual berths would generally be low in monsoon months, he added.

It might be noted that cyclone also affected normal working of Visakhapatnam port recently.
