Power situation in Kerala ‘comfortable’

Good monsoon rains so far this year in the catchment areas of the hydroelectric projects in Kerala has pushed up the water storage levels in the reservoirs from that of last year on this day.
The storage level in all the reservoirs in the State on Wednesday stood at 35 per cent of their capacity and with this 1,445 million units could be generated. It is 201 million units more than that of the storage available on this day last year, a senior KSEB source told Business Line.
Monsoon withdrawal?
“If the current trend prevailed then there won’t be any problem this year”. But, if the apprehensions expressed by the weathermen recently about a possible withdrawal of the monsoon turned out to be a reality then the situation would become uncomfortable and the Board may have to depend on high cost thermal power, he pointed out.
There was a report projecting that the southwest monsoon might withdraw resulting in substantial drop in the total rainfall to the 2004 levels. That year water storage level in the reservoirs fell sharply and with which only 2,500 million units could be generated against the normal level of 6,500 million units.
However, to meet such an eventuality the Board has already resorted to strict water management practices, he said.
