Scoop or spoof?
Journalists in the capital were left wondering whether Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath was serious or just trying his hand at humour when he addressed an event early this week. Speaking in the presence of the visiting Japanese Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry, he casually mentioned that the alignment of the proposed Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor was “not correct” as it bypassed his home State of Madhya Pradesh. The corridor is an ambitious
project where the Japanese Government is also involved and much work has gone into its planning. Since the project is expected to cost a whopping $90 billion, journalists thought that the casual intervention of Kamal Nath about altering the alignment was just that — a casual intervention. But by evening, when the proposed realignment appeared in an official release, there was a scramble in newsrooms to “realign” reports so as to include the Minister’s comments.
Veteran scribes, however, are not surprised at the Minister’s initiative as he is known to bring in Madhya Pradesh, particularly his Parliamentary constituency Chindwara, into any big event. Practicising something akin to US President George Bush, who routinely takes visiting dignitaries to his private ranch, Kamal Nath is reported to have organised an air-hop to Chindwara some months back when top honchos of retail giant Wal-Mart came on a scout-around.
