West Bengal thinks along `coastal tourism'
Somasroy Chakraborty
Kolkata, July 5
West Bengal Government
plans to promote `coastal tourism'
along the coast of the Bay
of Bengal. This is expected to
augment the number of beach
destinations in the State. Currently,
West Bengal has only
two main beach destinations -
Digha and Shankarpur.
In a meeting held last week
in Delhi, United Nations Development
Programme
(UNDP) has been asked to carry
out a study of the beaches of
West Bengal and Orissa.
"The beaches of Kerala and
Goa have been exhausted. The
Government of India has been
exploring the possibilities of
developing beach destinations
in other States. The beaches of
West Bengal and Orissa have a
huge potential which has not
been harnessed," Dr G.D. Gautama,
Principal Secretary in the
State Tourism department told
Business Line.
"We plan to promote coastal
tourism and beach destinations
in the State based on the UNDP
report," he added. According to
Dr Gautama, there are several
beaches in West Bengal including
Mandarmani and Dadanpatra
which have not been
explored. On the contrary, the
Digha beach has witnessed unplanned
growth, giving rise to
problems relating to sewerage,
roads and law and order.
While the State Government
will take up infrastructure development
of the unexplored
beaches, private players will be
invited to set up hotels and resorts,
he added.
