Summer special

— P.V. Sivakumar

Two in one: A large tuft of tender date palms hanging on palm trees on the outskirts of Hyderabad. In the city, dates are sold at Rs 40/kg. Four types of dates are made commonly known as kimri - unripe dates, khalal - the crunchy dates, rutab -the ripe and soft seedless dates and tamur - the sun-dried ones.

The world production of dates, according to FAO, stands at 5,526.56 tonnes with Saudi Arabia accounting for 970.49 tonnes . The dates pollinate naturally and in India, the seeds are used in animal feed , oils for soap and cosmetics and as an additive to coffee. Also the tender dates are tapped for their sweet sap which is converted into palm sugar. In Kerala, it is being extensively grown through tissue culture.
