Govt launches III phase of AIDS control programme

Our Bureau

New Delhi, July 6

The five-year third phase of the National AIDS Control Programme (NACP-III) was launched today with a budget of Rs 11,585 crore, of which the Government will spend Rs 8,023 crore.

The Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, expressed satisfaction at the new estimates from revised methodology, supported by UNAIDS and WHO, that put prevalence of HIV positive adults at 0.36 per cent against an earlier figure of 0.9 per cent.

These new estimates are believed to be more accurate, but the Minister and Ms Sujatha Rao, Additional Secretary and Director-General, National AIDS Control Organisation, warned against any complacency in the fight against AIDS.

The Minister welcomed the reports of a decline in numbers of HIV positive people in Tamil Nadu, but pointed out that at least 29 districts with high prevalence – in West Bengal, Orissa, Rajasthan and Bihar – had emerged.
