India, Qatar move to strengthen labour protection

Our Bureau

New Delhi, July 6 India has decided to strengthen an agreement with Qatar for bilateral initiatives to increase the benefits of Indian workers working in Qatar. This would be in the form of an additional protocol over and above the existing agreement between the two countries with regard to employment and labour.

The signing of the additional protocol was approved by the Union Cabinet here.

Grey areas

It would seek to remove grey areas in the current agreement to the benefit of the Indian workers, especially the unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled workers, the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Mr P.R. Dasmunshi, told reporters after the meeting.

Issues

The protocol would provide a framework to address various jobs-related issues and concerns facing the Indian workforce in Qatar. A major issue is related to housemaids and other domestic workers who have not been covered by the Qatari Labour Law.

The existing agreement on regulation of employment of Indian manpower between Qatar and India was signed on April 11, 1985.

The Cabinet, Mr Dasmunshi said, also gave its ex-post facto approval to the MoU on labour, employment and manpower signed between India and Kuwait three months ago.
