Bio-tech & Genetics States - Kerala Genome Valley gets US certification
Our Bureau Hyderabad, July 6 Genome Valley, India’s first biotech cluster with world-class infrastructure, has obtained a Certification Mark from the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). The IP-related mark could help in increasing FDI and attract bigger players into the Genome Valley, which is spread over 600 sq km. The CII Andhra Pradesh Technology Development and Promotion Centre (APTDC), with help from the State Government, has been working on the project for US registration since 2003, according to a CII release. There is a great need for registration of the ‘Genome Valley’ symbol in the US and Europe so as to draw more foreign investments and to promote the cluster. It was also granted a community trademark in the European Union in the year 2005. Genome Valley, promoted by the State Government, has over 100 biotech companies. It is being projected as a natural cluster for biotech research, training, collaboration and manufacturing facilities. The Industries and Commerce Department would be the authorised user of the Certification Mark. The symbol of ‘Genome Valley’ has also been filed in India for registration and is now under the process of grant. Certification marks are a form of IP usually given for compliance with defined standards. They may be used by anyone who can certify that the products involved meet certain established standards. An important requirement for certification marks is that the entity which applies for registration is considered “competent to certify” the products concerned.
