Shipping Higher river cargo throughput
Record cargo throughput on inland waterways.
The CMD of the Central Inland Water Transport Corporation (CIWTC), the public sector river transport company under the shipping ministry, was recently quoted as saying that his organisation transported about 200,000 tonnes of cargoes in 2006-07, a substantial jump over the throughputs achieved in the previous years, by employing over 40 vessels and 450 people. However, some questions remain unanswered. Two lakh tonnes, or roughly 16,000/17,000 tonnes per month, with a flee t of more than 40 vessels and a workforce of more than 450? How much revenue was earned from that much cargo? And how much was the cost of operation? How much was the budgetary support?
