Our Bureau Kolkata, July 8Students from Eastern India can now obtain their MBBS degrees from universities in the Philippines. Having done that, they can also look forward to being gainfully engaged in the US, Canada, West Asia, Malaysia and other Asian countries. Facilitation in this regard will be provided by Healthcare Management Education International (HCMI) of Singapore, which has announced the setting up of its eastern regional office in Kolkata. HCMI already has its operations in Chennai, Delhi and Ahmedabad. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Baljit Singh, Managing Director of HCMI, Singapore, said HCMI would help Indian students obtain their MBBS degrees from various universities that were accredited to the Commission of Higher Education, Government of Philippines. Mr Singh said that, to be eligible for the MBBS course, students would have to secure at least 50 per cent marks in subjects such as physics, chemistry, biology and english. A pilot entrance exam for them has also been introduced. On an average, students would have to pay between $20,000 and $28,000 for the four-year course. The Government of Philippines has agreed to provide five-year, multi-entry visas to parents of students who go to that country for pursuing their education, he said.
