Mr S.P. Shukla, President, Personal Business, Reliance Communications, launching Netconnect Data Cards in Bangalore on Monday. —
Our Bureau Bangalore, July 9 Reliance Communications unveiled on Monday new offers for its datacard NetConnect. A datacard is like a SIM card, but for laptops. It plugs into the PCMCIA slot and has a small antenna which connects a laptop to Reliance’s CDMA network. Reliance also offers USB modems, connectivity via Reliance mobile (through datacable) and fixed wireless phones. The speed of Internet via such cards is still at 144 kbps. The company has been promoting its data card to corporates, but is now actively targeting the mass market with new tariffs and bundled offers. Laptop users can now get online for just Rs 174. “We are targeting the 2 million laptop users in the country who do not own data cards. Eighty per cent of all laptop users in India do not have data cards,” said Mr S.P.Shukla, President-Personal Business, Reliance Communications. The company claims 75 per cent market share in the data card market in the country. Tata Indicom’s V card and Airtel’s data card also share the market. Tying up with four laptop vendors – HP, Acer, Lenovo and HCL – Reliance expects bundling of a data card for free with a new laptop to attract new Internet users. The network covers 9000 towns and 3.5 lakh villages.
