Human Resources ‘Expats find securing work permit complicated’
Our Bureau New Delhi, July 9 Due to the existing stringent work laws for expatriates in the country, the procedure to secure the work permit is extremely complicated for a foreigner and the absence of the right skills and talents is hurting various sectors of the industry, according to the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce. Triggered by the recent amendments in the patent laws, the Indian pharma industry is on the verge of exponential growth. Most companies have now refreshed their R&D initiatives and introduced new projects supported by state-of-the art laboratories. The expansive demand-supply gap for R&D talent in the country is driving Indian pharma companies to lure mid-career expatriates to head their research divisions. Expatriates bring about exposure to superior high-end research. They also acquaint companies at home with the legal and regulatory processes followed abroad. Expatriates are taking up positions in Indian drug firms, but it’s still only a trickle, according to the Chamber. The growing numbers of acquisitions and joint ventures requires transfer of knowhow and manpower but due to the complicated laws on work permits, project-based hiring becomes really difficult.
