Concern over skilled manpower shortage

New Delhi, July 8 To maintain the growth momentum of the economy, it will be imperative to take corrective action for the skilled manpower shortage that certain sectors are faced with, according to industry chamber FICCI. In the biotechnology sector, there is shortage of nearly 80 per cent of Doctorate and Post Doctorate scientists, according to a survey conducted by the chamber.

In the food processing sector, there is a shortage of 65 per cent of refrigeration mechanics, electricians and fitters, 70 per cent of food safety professionals and 60 per cent of agricultural scientists.

In the health sector, the survey points out that number of doctors available in the country in 2005 was 5,92,215. Additions to the pool per year is 22,000 currently and the projected demand in 2012 is put at 12,00,000.
