Five degree colleges sanctioned in AP

Hyderabad, July 9 The Andhra Pradesh Government has sanctioned five degree colleges as part of the Remote and Interior Areas Development (RIAD) programme besides two B.Ed colleges.

The new degree colleges would come up at Sitampet (Srikakulum), Gummalakshmipuram (Vijayanagaram), Chitanpally (Visakhapatnam), Eturunagaram (Warangal) and Utnur (Adilabad), Mr Redya Naik, Minister for Tribal Welfare & RIAD, Government of Andhra Pradesh told newspersons here on Monday.

“Education development is one of the eight priority areas including creation of employment opportunities and basic infrastructure in the 5,626 villages in 18 districts of the State,” Mr Naik said. Two new B.Ed colleges would be set up in Araku Valley (Visakhapatnam) and Utnur, while 100 additional seats would be added to the existing B.Ed college in Khammam, he added.

Initiated in 2006-07, the RIAD programme had a budget of Rs 4,000 crore for three years. “We have already spent Rs 900 crore and are keen on ensuring proper spending of the remaining amount,” the Minister said.
