Bayer Bio bid to boost hybrid cotton seeds

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, July 11 Bayer BioScience Pvt Ltd, formerly Proagro Seed Company, has conducted a ‘Target 400’ programme at Gadwal in the neighbouring Mahboobnagar district with a view to helping the hybrid cotton seed growers increase productivity.

The programme targets to increase the productivity from the present 260 packets of seeds (of 750 gm each) an acre to 400 packets. The idea was to discourage the farmers from using child labour in the seed growing activity, a company spokesperson said.

The company prepared a kit, which included a 60-page manual in Telugu and gloves and chart on safe use of crop protection products. The manual covered a variety of aspects that go into the seed growing activity.

Use of scientific methods

“Following scientific methods would help the farmers tackle the pests and other problems. We demonstrated them how to go about with regard to various management practices,” she said.

To take care of the children who dropped out of the schools for taking up labour work on the seed producing fields, the company tied up with Naandi Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, promoted by Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, to establish bridge schools.
