Landslip halts train traffic on Hassan-Mangalore line

Our Bureau

Mangalore, July 11 The movement of goods trains on the Hassan-Mangalore route has been affected due to a landslip at a place 65 km from Hassan, close to Edakumeri station. Sources in Hassan-Mangalore Rail Development Company (HMRDC) told Business Line that movement of the trains has been stopped on the route for the past two days. Customers have been advised not to load on the route for the time being.

In a major landslip, the railway track has been blocked for around 200 metres. Earth is piled up on the track along that stretch and with the heavy rainfall, water is overflowing.

Personnel from the Mysore division of the South Western Railway (SWR) are on the job to clear the landslips as soon as possible.

First, they have to remove the piled-up earth on the track and then allow the water to flow into the valley. The work is getting delayed due to rainfall. They hoped that the track would be brought back to normal within three days. Based on the condition in the area, movement of goods trains could be allowed at restricted speed after that, they said.

Earlier landslips

Though some minor landslips occurred during this monsoon on the Hassan-Mangalore route, Railways brought the tracks back to normal condition within six to 24 hours in all the cases. This is a major case of landslip on the track, they added.

The Hassan-Mangalore railway line was commissioned for freight (rpt freight) traffic on May 5, 2006. The railway line handled 1.6 million tonnes of freight during 2006-07 as against the target of 1.4 million tonnes for the year.
