Biggest producer: Farmers transporting bananas for sale at a local market in the outskirts of Guwahati on Wednesday. Assam is the largest producer of banana in the north-eastern region. Bananas grown in the State are sent to Bangladesh, Bhutan, West Bengal and Bihar apart from the other six north-eastern States.

The country is estimated to produce 16 million tonnes of bananas annually and accounts for 19 per cent of the global trade in the fruit. –
