RINL signs pact with Danieli for casting machines

Deal with BHEL for supply, erection of turbo blower

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL) signed an agreement with Danieli & C Spa of Italy here on Thursday for supply, erection and commissioning of three continuous casting machines. This is for converting liquid steel into billets, both in square and round shapes, a semi-finished product, which is the input for other rolling mills in the first stage of expansion works, and structural mill and special bar mill in the second stage.

According to a press release issued by the company, the agreement was signed by Mr A.K. Banerjee, Executive Director (Projects), on behalf of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, and Mr John C. Parker, Vice-President (sales) and representative of Danieli India.

Mr P.K. Bishnoi, Chairman and Managing Director of the steel plant, who was present on the occasion, said it was an important milestone in the expansion project intended to hike the capacity of the plant from 3 million tonnes (mt) to 6.3 mt at a total cost of Rs 8,600 crore.

Casting machines

The cost of the casting machines project is Rs 538 crore involving a component of €32 million (roughly Rs 180 crore) and it is to be completed in 25 months, according to the press release. The Indian partners in the consortium are Gilanders Arbuthnot (Kolkata) and Danieli Engineering India (Kolkata).

Mr R. Benjamin, Senior Vice-President (commercial), Gilanders, and Mr B.K. Ghosh, former Director (finance), Danieli Engineering, were also present on the occasion.

Agreement with BHEL

Meanwhile, on Wednesday RINL signed an agreement with BHEL for supply and erection of turbo blower required for supplying air for combustion in the blast furnace. BHEL is executing the contract along with consortium partner, Manturbo of Germany.

According to a press release issued by the company, the main blower is under the scope of Manturbo, the turbine will be manufactured at the Hyderabad plant of the BHEL.

The capacity of the blower is 4.18 lakh normal cubic metre/hour and it consumes 40 MW of power.

The cost of the project is Rs 107 crore and it is to be executed within 27 months, to match with the commissioning of the blast furnace.

The blast furnace is being supplied by Paulwurth (Italy) and L&T consortium.

Mr. A.K Banerjee, the Executive Director (Projects), RINL, Mr Fritz (Manturbo) and Mr Prakash Vir (BHEL) signed the agreement.

The capacity of the steel plant is being doubled from the present three million tonnes at a cost of Rs 8,600 crore.

There are already two blast furnaces in the plant – Krishna and Godavari – and the third is being readied as a part of the expansion project.
