Withdrawal of stocks control order sought

Our Correspondent

Madurai, July 12 Trade circles here have urged the Government of Tamil Nadu to withdraw its order imposing stock limit restrictions on food grains.

The Tamilnadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in a statement, has said the imposition of the Tamil Nadu Pulses, Grams and Wheat (Storage Control) Order, 2007 would only cause unwarranted scarcity condition and rise in prices of the dailyuse essential food items.

COUNTER PRODUCTIVE

Pointing out that Tamil Nadu has largely been importing these items from other States, the chamber further observed that these types of restrictions should apply to producing States and its enforcement would only prove counter-productive as movement of consignments from other States through rail wagons was not under the control of the traders.

Stating there is no rationale behind the imposition, the chamber pleaded for its withdrawal immediately or at least exempt stocks imported from other States from the purview of the order, just like stocks imported from other countries are exempted from the Order.

IMPOSED RESTRICTIONS

The Tamilnadu Foodgrains Merchants Association, in a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, Minister for Food and the Secretary of the department, pointing out that the State has been dependent on import of most of the essential food items from other States, has underscored the need to hold more stocks by traders and said such restrictions should apply only to Reliance, ITC and other multinational companies entering the retail trade.

NOT PRACTICAL

Further, the imposed restrictions are not practical and acceptable. This will give rise to scarcity and rise in prices of the items.

The association has pleaded for its withdrawal immediately.
