SSI States - Tamil Nadu `Hike excise exemption limit for SSIs' Our Correspondent
Madurai, July 12 The existing Central excise exemption limit for the smallscale industries (SSIs) should be raised to Rs 5 crore, the Madurai District Tiny And Small Scale Industries Association (Maditssia) here has said. For those opting for Cenvat duty from the beginning, only 60 per cent of normal rate of duty should be collected up to the exemption limit, the association proposed at its 33rd annual general meeting held recently. The association's other demands relating to the Centre include amendment to MSMED Act to limit the turnover of SSI units to Rs 50 crore in addition to the investment limit of Rs 5 crore on plant and machinery; simplification of labour law and enactment of a single law; exemption of SSI units from fringe benefit tax, concessional bank rate of interest for SSI units, completion of all infrastructural works, early development of Madurai Airport as an international airport and linking of all southern Indian rivers in the first phase to improve water management. Demands relating to the State Government include announcement of a policy for SSI, giving representation to district SSI associations in the Advisory Committee to form the SSI policy, establishment of a new industrial estate at Madurai and due recognition to existing SSI units.
