In a notification dated July 10, the DGFT allowed the import of whole, split, ground and other forms of betel nuts only through Mangalore Port, and of Nepalese origin through Jogbani and Panitanki land customs stations. He substantiated this by statin g that Nepal is not in the list of arecanut-producing nations in the recent database compiled by the Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development (DASD). According to the database, India exported 219 tonnes of betelnut worth Rs 1.09 crore to Nepal during 2005-06. During the period, India imported 636 tonnes of betel nut worth Rs 1.25 crore from Nepal.
