Our Bureau

Chennai, July 16 SSN Institutions has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Centre for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP) to set up a research centre at the SSN campus in Chennai.

CSTEP is a non-profit research and development organisation and works in areas such as energy security, agriculture and food security, empowering IT and communications and new materials development such as for semiconductors and photo-voltaics.

As part of the MoU, CSTEP and SSN will work on projects related to sustainable energy and climate control. When asked about the funding required to sustain the research centre, Mr Shiv Nadar, Founder, SSN Institutions, told presspersons at a press conference, “we will find a way to get it (funds for research)”, without sharing details. He said it was important to have vision for research and then think of funding. “A large quantum of funds dedicated to research by the Government are lying unused. We need to use this money in research,” he said.

Dr V.S. Arunachalam, Founder and Chairman, CSTEP, former Chief Scientific Advisor to the Prime Minister and Head of Defence Research Development Organisation will head the research centre as Chief Scientific Advisor. Other scientists constituting the research advisory council include Dr Raj Reddy, Professor of Computer Science and Robotics, Carnegie Mellon University, Dr R. Natarajan, former Chairman AICTE and former Director, IIT Madras and Dr N. Balakrishnan, Associate Director, Indian Institute of Science.

SSN Institutions also has tie-ups for collaborative research with National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan and Aichi Institute of Technology, Japan.
