Tea Coonoor tea sales fetch lower returns
P.S. Sundar Coonoor, July 16 Teas sold through the auctions of Coonoor Tea Trade Association fetched Rs 6.76 crore in the first half of 2007 less than that of 2006. An analysis of market reports for the 26 auctions held till June end shows that the overall earnings slid despite a marginal increase in prices because of the lower volume traded. Prices rose to an average of Rs 47.77 a kg from Rs 46.71 last year. But the volumes fell to 1.56 crore kg from 1.74 crore kg. Consequently, the overall earnings declined to Rs 74.52 crore from Rs 81.28 crore. Producers earned less because of CTC sales even as orthodox teas accrued handsome increases. The price of orthodox teas increased to Rs 59.14 a kg from Rs 53.24 even as the volumes sold increased to 1.41 million kg from 1.3 lakh kg. On the contrary, the price of CTC teas rose marginally from Rs 46.18 to Rs 46.64, but the volumes sold fell to 1.42 crore kg from 1.61 crore kg. Consequently, while the earnings from orthodox rose to Rs 8.34 crore from Rs 6.92 crore, that from CTC teas fell to Rs 66.23 crore from Rs 74.35 crore.
