Outsourcing DSCL to raise sourcing from China
Our Bureau New Delhi, July 17 DCM Shriram Consolidated Limited (DSCL) has finalised plans to source a large number of items, both raw material and finished products, from China. As a first step, the company set up a representative office in Beijing this month. The DSCL Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Ajay Shriram, told Business Line that: “Over the past few years, we have been importing a lot of items from China for our PVC business and chloro-vinyl business, as well as items sol d through our Hariyali Kisan Bazar outlets.” “We also imported a boiler from China for the 48-MW power plant we are setting up at our plant at Bharuch, in Gujarat. Over the years we expect to source more material from China,” he said. The company also intends to procure from China a large number of engineering items required for routine repair and maintenance work in it factories, Mr Shriram said. Items currently sourced from China for the Hariyali Kisan Bazar shops include bags, toys, plastic furniture, rain-coats, cosmetics and various items of day-to-day domestic use. “In the years to come we will increase our imports from China and it will be a very wide range of products,” Mr Shriram said, adding that over the past few years, increased networking with various agencies and business set-ups based in China have delivered encouraging results for the company. To further leverage on these synergies and keep up the momentum, we decided to set up a base there, he said. DSCL’s net revenues improved by around 16 per cent in fiscal 2006-07, mainly based on higher volumes in the plastics and chemical businesses, higher retail sales and better price realisations in the PVC resins and cement businesses.
