Fiat offering bi-fuel engine option in its models

Mayur N. Shah

Mumbai, July 16 Fiat India plans to offer bi-fuel engines — manufactured to run on petrol and other fuels like CNG — in its present and forthcoming models, said its Managing Director, Mr De Filippis Giovanni.

Besides offering this bi-fuel option, the company is also keen on promoting turbo power in its range of engines for the forthcoming models.

Initially, the present range like the Palio Stile would be introduced in the market with a CNG kit; later on the engines developed locally would be compatible and modified to run on CNG fuel option sans the kit. This option would be available with models such as the Grande Punto and the Linea in the near future.

Turbo power is another focus area for the company; it is to offer high end performance without any compromise on fuel efficiency. Earlier, a select group of journalists when taken to Istanbul for the Turkey launch of the Fiat Linea, were witness to a turbo power petrol variant of the Fiat Linea.

Experts said such engine options could carve out a niche for the company and help it achieve its target of attaining 5 per cent market share by 2010. Fiat is currently offering a niche model on the same lines like the Palio 1.6 litre -100bhp model at Rs 4.45 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai).
