Visakhapatnam, July 18 It is not desirable to make reservations statutory in the private sector, as any such move will have an adverse impact on industrial growth, said Mr M. Harischandra Prasad, Chairman of Andhra Sugars.

In a joint statement issued here, Mr Prasad and Mr B.V. Rama Rao, President of the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Industries, said the Government should provide equal educational opportunities to all castes and sections of people in society and initiate special welfare measures for the depressed classes.

“But we feel it is not desirable to introduce reservations to the SCs and STs in the private sector. It will have a negative impact,” they said.

However, according to Mr Prasad and Mr Rama Rao, the industrialists were giving employment to the SCs and STs voluntarily in their untis. They cited the example of Andhra Sugars, situated at Tanuku in West Godavari, which began as a small sugar factory with 350 employees 60 years ago. “At present, Andhra Sugars employs 13,000 in different group units and companies and a large number of them belong to SCs and STs,” the statement said.

Mr Rama Rao said economic backwardness should be taken as the criterion in extending help and all should be provided opportunities to educate themselves and improve their skills.
