Bench reserves judgment in PIL on Nandigram police firing

Our Legal Correspondent

Kolkata, July 19 The Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court comprising the Chief Justice, Mr S.S. Nijjar, and Mr Justice P.C. Ghose today reserved judgment in the public interest suit filed relating to the police firing which took place at Nandigram on March 14, 2007, leading to the loss of 14 lives.

On March 15 the court had, on its own, passed an order directing that the CBI investigate the incident.

Thereafter, nine PILs have been filed seeking further investigations by the CBI.

The State Government opposed all the petitions arguing that the court had no jurisdiction to pass an order for a CBI inquiry without any sanction of the State Government.
