AP identifies 12 mining zones around Hyderabad

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, July 20

About 12 exclusive mining zones, spread across 1.41 lakh acres around Hyderabad, have been identified to promote building stone, metal and manufacture of stone sand industry.

The Andhra Pradesh Government has already declared an exclusive mining zone (EMZ), at Bandaraviryala over 670 acres. The State Department of Mines and Geology, has identified these EMZs, according to its Director, Mr V.D. Rajagopal.

The Department has also undertaken preliminary survey/studies to identify possible EMZs in Mahbubnagar, Visakhapatnam, Krishna, Guntur, Chittoor, Nalgonda and Medak districts. The idea was to demarcate these EMZs for sustainable development and safe mining.

Giving these details in a presentation at the ongoing MSI-2007, the two-day convention of the Mineralogical Society of India at the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Dr Rajagopal said the department was laying emphasis on timely disposal of mineral concession applications to mitigate the problems of entrepreneurs and stake holders. Currently, 48 minerals are being produced and there are 1,760 mining leases for major minerals and 6,625 quarry leases for minor minerals. With 97 major and medium scale mineral-based industries, Andhra Pradesh produces about 90 million tonnes of industrial minerals and contributes Rs 1,383 crore of revenue during 2006-07. Andhra Pradesh is ahead of other important mineral producing states such as Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Orissa, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka in terms of its revenues from the mining sector.
