Chennai, July 20

Have an idea but do not know if it can be commericialised? A visit to ‘proto.in’ may help, which begins on Saturday.

Proto.in is a two-day event meant to serve as a platform for technology start-ups. Begun last year, it will see around 25 young entrepreneurs pitch their innovative products to an audience consisting of investors, potential business partners and clients, according to Mr Ravi Shankar, part of the team organising ‘proto.in’.

The event received 120 nominations, including 15 from start-ups in Malaysia. Of these, 25 have been short-listed by a panel consisting of industry experts based on parameters such as maturity of product offering, focus of the team behind the product and an understanding of the target market.

According to Mr Shankar, these are some of the criteria that investors look for before funding a project. “They (investors) are also keen on products that can hit the market in the shortest possible time,” he told Business Line on the sidelines of a press conference organised by The Indus Entreprenuers (TiE), a non-profit organisation that promotes entrepreneurship.

TiE is one of the organisations is involved in mentoring start-ups and supports ‘proto.in’. Last year, 27 start-ups demonstrated their products at the first edition of ‘proto.in’, of which seven bagged funding, while the rest found partners and clients. This edition will see at least 15 venture capitalist firms, including Sequoia Capital, Matrix Partners, Canaan Partners and Gryelock Ventures. The event is supported by Internet and Mobile Association of India, TeNet, MDEC, IDA Singapore, TiE and Nasscom.

Entry is reserved for members representing the industry and start-ups. Entry ticket is priced Rs 1,000.
