Group on SEZs examines land acquisition issue
Our Bureau
New Delhi, July 20 The Group of Ministers on SEZs, which met on Thursday, examined a proposal to change the level of Government assistance to private entrepreneurs in the land acquisition process for setting up SEZs and the benchmark compensation level for lands purchased from farmers.
Proposal for extending extra compensation based on the increased price of the land in the future was also discussed.
The earlier policy envisaged that once the promoter investor of the SEZ had purchased 90 per cent of the required land from the owners, the Government would intervene if there is any difficulty in acquisition of the remaining 10 per cent.
However, the revised proposal under discussion suggests that instead of a 90:10 ratio, a more realistic ratio would be 70:30, whereby the Government could intervene once the investor has bought 70 per cent of the land.
The benchmark price would be the last three years’ average of the highest price realised by the farmers for 50 per cent of the plots sold in that area, plus the additional amount offered by the respective State over the approved floor price, sources said.
