Cisco launches courses for entry-level jobs

Our Bureau

Chennai, July 22 Networking major Cisco Systems has launched two new certificate courses (of 280 hours duration each) under the Cisco Networking Academy brand, primarily targeting entry-level jobseekers. Part of the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) programme, the two courses — CCNA Discovery and CCNA Exploration — will focus on applied skills and technical depth respectively.

Ms Sandy Walsh, Regional Manager, Education Programmes and Corporate Responsibility, Cisco - Asia Pacific said at a press conference that Cisco wanted to “increase the talent pool of candidates with networking skills”. According to an IDC report, India is expected to have a shortage of over 86,300 networking professionals this year and this number is likely to reach 1.37 lakh by 2009.

Cisco plans to train about 1,000 candidates initially in the newly introduced courses. To increase the reach of its courses, it plans to introduce them in Indian languages (depending on demand) and is currently working on a Hindi language curriculum, Ms Walsh said. These would be introduced in ITIs, vocational training centres and government-run schools. The company also plans to offer scholarships to needy candidates.

Cisco has also introduced the first Cisco Certified Network Professional programme in South Asia at the Vellore Institute of Technology. The company has spent over $250 million globally in the past 10 years on its education initiatives.
