Wipro unveils ‘green’ desktops

Our Bureau

Bangalore, July 23 This desktop is small and environment-friendly. Wipro Infotech’s green range of personal computers - Protos - was launched on Monday.

These desktops consume up to 25 per cent less power when compared to a conventional desktop, says the company.

The Protos small factor PCs run on an embedded processor (those used in mobiles), which is slower than PC processors at 533 MHz but uses much lesser energy. AMD’s Geode LX 800 processors only consume 3 watts of power, compared to the 65 watts by a PC processor, Mr Vamsi Krishna, Technical Manager, AMD, told Business Line. He said the processor was capable of handling daily tasks of a regular PC user.

Features

A Protos PC features a 40 GB hard disk and 256 MB RAM. It runs on Linux operating system and will retail for Rs 12,990 plus taxes. For this, a 15-inch CRT (cathode ray tube) monitor, a keyboard and an optical scroll mouse will be included. In a release, Mr Ashutosh Vaidya – Vice President, Wipro Personal Computing, said, “Protos will cater to specific needs like low power consumption and a small footprint. Protos is dust-resistant, maintenance-free and network ready. ”
