‘US tech spend to rise this year’

Bangalore July 23

Technology research firm Forrester said IT spending pace in the US was likely to grow this year, after a strong first quarter in several sectors revealed positive outlook for rest of the year.

“The first quarter of 2007 IT investment and purchases data showed a distinct slowdown in growth from the first half of 2006. However, the weakness was not as pronounced as in fourth quarter of 2006, indicating that the worst of the slump has already happened,” said the Forrester Vice-President, Mr Andrew Bartels, in a recent report on ‘US IT spending update Q2 2007’.

“Growth in second quarter of 2007 should show signs of improvement when the data starts to come in during July and August, and IT purchases should strengthen in the second half of the year,” Mr Bartels said.

Forrester expects IT investments in 2007 at $369 billion, a five per cent growth above 2006 IT investment of $351 billion. Investment in computer equipment will rebound from the 2006 decline of two per cent growing by five per cent for the year. It added said that operating IT budgets for 2007 will be six per cent higher than in 2006. However, spending on IT consulting and integration services will remain at the same growth rate of two per cent in 2007.
