Despite use for fuel: A vendor selling corn in Thrissur, Kerala. A rising trend in global crude prices has led to diversion of corn for ethanol for fuel, paving way for lower availability of corn for feed and edible use. Corn acreage in the country has dropped from 2.71 lakh hectares in 2005-06 to 2.41 lakh hectares in 2006-07, affecting production drastically. During the current kharif season, area under corn is down to 33.17 lakh hectares from 53.4 lakh hectares during the corresponding period last year. –
