Letters Communication compromise
The editorial “Communication compromise” (Business Line, July 23) has dealt with the manner in which the public sector units (PSUs) are being treated and how the current handling of the BSNL tender issue is bound to affect the communications behemoth, BSNL, which is known for its efficiency and commercial performance. The way the issue has been handled by the Communications Minister leaves much to be desired. The decision of formulating a policy is time-consuming since several aspects have to be examined in depth, before seeking Cabinet approval for application by the operating units in the field. 3G is the latest version and if BSNL does not equip itself with it, the company is sure to lose the edge in the competition with the private players. There is no denying that the cellular telephone field is a goldmine with vast scope for growth and revenue accrual. The Government could perhaps make an exception in the matter of 3G before the policy is finalised. T. R. Anandan Coimbatore ***
As pointed out in the editorial “Communication compromise”, BSNL, hamstrung by a capacity shortage, has slipped to the fourth position among mobile providers. It is hoped that the Minister will solve the problem amicably and the strike is averted . However, it is necessary that the functioning of the PSU be freed from government control. It is time the Prime Minister initiated action in this regard. A. Jacob Sahayam e-mail
