TRAI seeks views on HITS operation

Our Bureau

New Delhi, July 24 After conditional access system, the Government is now considering introducing a satellite-based delivery platform that could rival the service offered by the direct-to-home platform.

Headend-in-the-sky (HITS) has been proposed by the Zee Group since a few years. The technology entails the operator uplinking encrypted signals of TV channels of different broadcasters to his HITS satellite, and cable operators across the country downlinking these. Zee, which has a licence for the platform has welcomed the move. “The technology would be the most appropriate and economical for the shift to digitalisation of television,” Mr A Mohan, Executive Vice-President - Essel Corp told Business Line.

A typical digital headend today costs between 10-15 crore, under HITS it would only cost Rs 1.6 lakh for a 100 channel set up, said Mr Mohan.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, has requested Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to formulate and recommend the policy guidelines for HITS operation.
