No compromise

Your editorial “Communication compromise” (Business Line, July 23) dealt with the general topic of how PSUs should not be treated, and especially how the current handling of the BSNL tender issue is bound to result in a serious set back to the communication behemoth. BSNL is one of the star performers among government entities in terms of efficiency and commercial performance.

The handling of the important issue of procuring equipment for its projected growth requirements and the finer points of deciding the technological aspects leaves much to be desired.

The decision to formulate a policy is fine but working out such guidelines is a time-consuming affair as it requires in-depth examination of many aspects of the issue and Cabinet approval for application by the operating units in the field.

3G is the latest technology in this field, and if BSNL does not acquire such equipment and know-how now, it is sure to lose its edge in the competition with private players.

It needs no reiteration that the cellular telephony area is a goldmine with vast scope for growth and revenue accrual.

The government would do well to make an exception in the matter of 3G before finalisation of the policy.
