Thiruvananthapuram, July 25 As many as 2,000 outlets will be opened across the State as part of Onam fairs being conducted jointly by the Kerala State Consumers’ Federation Ltd (Consumerfed) and the Cooperation Department.

To check prices, shortage

The fairs, aimed at checking shortage and price rise of essential commodities during the Onam season, will last 40 days between July 25 and September 5, the Minister for Cooperation, Mr G. Sudhakaran, said here on Wednesday.

The outlets will sell 32 items at prices below the market prices.

While the Government will extend subsidy to 13 items, the Cooperation Department will give a reduction of 10 per cent on other items being sold by the outlets.

Monitoring committee

The Minister said that district-level monitoring committees, chaired by the President of the district panchayat, would be formed for the effective functioning of the Onam fairs.

The Representatives of Civil Supplies Corporation, Consumerfed, and the Cooperation Department will be members on the committees.

The quality of the items being sold through the outlets will be ensured, and outlets should display price lists, the Minister added.
