R.V. Educational sets up Rs 4-cr design centre

Bangalore, July 25

R.V. Educational Institutions has established a VLSI design centre covering 8,000 sq. ft with an investment of Rs 4 crore in the city.

The centre will promote advanced electronics education and add to the workforce a steady stream of industry-ready engineers. The domestic semiconductor industry has been kicking up awareness about talent crunch in the hardware domain. This is one of industry-academia initiatives designed to address the demand.

By 2015, there will be eight lakh jobs for professionals in the semiconductor industry (VLSI, hardware, embedded software). “We will prepare graduates for the industry with experience centres and will ensure they are trained to suit the requirements of the industry,” said Mr M.K. Panduranga Shetty, President, R.V. Educational Institutions.

Well-equipped centre

The data centre is equipped with products from Sun Microsystems – network attached storage of eight terabytes, four Login servers, 11 SunFire 4100 servers, and 80 SunRay thin clients. A high-end APC UPS (unlimited power supply) unit and an intrusion prevention security appliance by the Ahmedabad-based Cyberroam have also been installed.

“Sun Microsystems has had long standing relationships with the academic community as facilitators to one-to-many dissemination of knowledge. Through this initiative, we hope to contribute to the research development at RV,” said Mr Anil Valluri, Country Director, Services Practices, Sun Microsystems India.

Two programmes have begun, which charge Rs 33,000 and Rs 55,000.

To start with, 20 students will be trained. The next batch will be able to accommodate 48. Engineers will also be able to pursue VLSI semiconductor design and research jobs at the centre. Students will be assigned aptitude-based tasks and will work on current design challenges.
