New chief steering ONGC ‘towards his vision’

Pratim Ranjan Bose

Kolkata, July 25 Having formally taken over the driving seat of ONGC group of companies this month, Mr R.S. Sharma is now on his course to bring the house in order.

He sets priorities in the basics be it business or administration. “I am now licensed to steer the company towards my vision,” Mr Sharma said.

E&P business

In business, he has stepped up gas on consolidation of E&P business. About other peripheral business activities such as refining, petrochemicals, power and others, he assured that the company would stand by its existing commitments.

“In E&P, we have laid maximum emphasis on an efficient data acquisition and interpretation. This has already started yielding results through higher accretion of reserves,” the ONGC Chairman said, referring to the string of discoveries — including the much publicised discovery in KG basin — in the last one year.

Apart from stepping up gas on consolidation of the E&P business, Mr Sharma now plans to train his guns on VVIP intervention in the day-to-day operations of ONGC.

“As a PSU, we are obliged to answer the queries raised by the administration, legislature and other constitutional forums as well as its representatives. However, intervention in issues which are entirely management’s prerogative is not welcome,” Mr Sharma told Business Line.

“We are creating a dossier on such VVIP interventions benefiting a section of employees. I make it loud and clear that the employees engineering such interventions are going to suffer,” he said.
